This week participants are invited to reflect on a song or piece of music that is important to them - particularly one that helps to uplift or helps to get through challenging times.
We've only just started but there have already been some great contributions. As well as collecting songs from Southall residents, we are also starting to branch out of Southall to collect song recommendations from first generation South Asian communities from across the UK. if you would like to contribute or know anyone who would be interested, please send us a message (m.sorya@lcc.arts.ac.uk). From this process we hope to collate and share a playlist that reflects the interests, memories and musical tastes of a generation whose lives and stories are at the heart of this project.
In the context of the current pandemic, many people are beginning to describe a sense of seeing the world anew and reconsidering our relationships with each other and the world around us. The lyrics of all the songs selected so far are powerful in their own right but also take on a new meaning in the context of all that's happening in at the moment. We've therefore included lyrics for each song and participants have said a few words about the songs personal meaning to them, which will be included in their own blog posts.
